**Track Of The Day** The Allman Brothers - Whipping Post, The Fillmore East 1970

In a 24 month period between 1969 and 1971 Duane Allman went from being a relative unknown to becoming one of rock's most revered guitar virtuosos. It was sadly at the end of those two years on October 29th that Duane was involved in a motorcycle accident and died. It was only a few months after the release and the success of The Allman Brothers double live album 'At Fillmore East' which still to this day finds it's way onto various 'greatest albums of all time' lists. Rolling Stone ranked the album at number 49 on it's 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time.

'Whipping Post' was a 5-minute song from the Allman Brothers Band's 1969 debut album, but when the band played live it became the standard for long epic jams that could range from anywhere between 15 and 30 minutes. The solo's are shared between Duane and lead guitarist Dicky Betts.

Opening in 11/4 which is unusual for a rock band (and which Greg Allman openly admitted he didn't realise), this video is not from the 'At Fillmore East' album, but from a show at the same venue in 1970. If you want to hear the 23-minute version from the album we've included that too at the bottom of the page.
