Stevie Ray Vaughan 'Number One' Guitar On Display At Texas State Museum
"Take a journey through Texas and a century of music with Texas Music
Roadtrip. This special exhibition explores the people and
places that put Texas music on the map."
Stevie Ray Vaughan's famous 'Number One' Stratocaster will be on
display until October 14th at the Bob Bullock Texas State History
Museum In Austin as part of the 'Texas Roadtrip Exhibit'.
SRV's strat is one of the most instantly recognisable guitars in
history and has been kept in storage by Jimmy Vaughan since his
brother's tragic death in 1990. Now Jimmy has loaned the instrument
to the Texas State History Museum to give fans a unique chance to
see it up close and in detail.
Number One (also known as Vaughan's 'First Wife') was a 1962/63
Fender Stratocaster used by Vaughan for most of his career; it was
"rebuilt more times than a custom Chevy." Vaughan always claimed it
was a 1959 model, since that date was written on the back of the
pick-ups; Rene Martinez, who maintained the guitar since 1980, saw
the year 1963 stamped in the body and 1962 on the neck. After
purchasing the instrument in 1973 from Ray Henning's Heart of Texas
music shop in Austin, Texas, it was his main performing instrument
and companion. It is incredibly worn through years of playing and
touring, has SRV written on the pickguard and a flipped bridge,
putting the whammy bar on top. Vaughan used the guitar on all five
of his studio albums and on Family Style.
Also on display will be Jimmie Vaughan's white '63 Stratocaster
that he used with the Fabulous Thunderbirds.
