Led Zeppelin Declined Offer to Perform Charity Gig

Led Zeppelin Declined Offer to Perform Charity Gig -

Led Zeppelin were asked by ex-US president Bill Clinton to reunite once again last year in order to perform at the 12-12-12 Hurricane Sandy Benefit Concert, but he was unable to talk the remaining members of Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones into playing.

Clinton, who served as the 42nd President of the United States from 1993 - 2001, met the band while at their Kennedy Center Honors celebration at the White House in December of last year.

During the event president Barack Obama had thanked and praised the rock godfathers for "making us all feel young" after last year's release of live DVD 'Celebration Day,' recorded in 2007.

David Saltzman of the Robin Hood Foundation recently explained to US TV show 60 Minutes that he and Hollywood producer, Harvey Weinstein had a plan to bring about a Led Zep performance.

Saltzman said:

"There were two bands that we were desperate to recruit. One was The Rolling Stones, the other was Led Zeppelin. [Film executive] Harvey Weinstein had this great idea that we could enlist Bill Clinton to convince Led Zeppelin to reunite, to perform at the 12-12-12 concert."

"So, Harvey & I got on a plane and flew down to Washington to meet with President Clinton, who was going to be seeing the members of Led Zeppelin, who were being honored at the Kennedy Center. And, you know, the President was terrific. [He said] 'I really want to do this; this would be a fantastic thing. I love Led Zeppelin.' AndBill Clinton himself asked Led Zeppelin to reunite and they wouldn't do it."

The Rolling Stones  headlined the event alongside a host of major artists including Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel and others.

The 12-12-12 event at Madison Square Garden raised $50 million to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy.
