Matrix Announces Lightweight Guitar Speaker -
Matrix Amplification, who you may already know for their GT1000FX amplifier, popular with users of modelling amplifiers continue in their quest for all things lightweight with the release of their Neolight NL12 1x12" guitar cab. The aim was to produce a small, light-weight cabinet that didn't compromise on sound and from the various comments from people that have tried it, they have succeded.
Weighing just 7.7 kg ( 16.9 lbs) The NL12 packs a lot of sound into a tiny cabinet. With it's low-set, full-width bass port, it has a distinctive appearance. A classic dark grey grille cloth goes well with the black textured paint finish and metal corners look like they are meant to last. The weight is surprising, most people who have picked it up were either shocked or assumed it must be a an empty mock-up, that soon changed when they plugged it in and fired it up.
More surprising than the weight is the sound. It sounds more like a full-bodied 2x12" cab, pushing air in a way that you really don't expect from a tiny lightweight box. The tone is full and deep, with strong punchy mids. It has enough "classic" tone to work well with most valve heads, yet is clear enough to allow the users of modellers such as the AxeFX and the Kemper to bend their sounds to their liking.
Here is what Guitar Interactive colomnist Tom Quayle had to say: "Not only do these things sound incredible, they weigh virtually nothing. On a weight to tone ratio there is literally nothing to beat them!"
