Ovation Guitars' US Plant Set for Closure
The iconic Ovation guitar factory which is based in New Hartford, Conn is set to close this Summer.
Fender, the parent company to Ovation, announced last Wednesday that the factory will close this coming June.
The Ovation factory is currently the only U.S plant that produces Ovation guitars and has done since 1967. However, according to a statement the company will close the factory due to "current market conditions and insufficient volume levels," the company said in a statement.
The classic guitar brand was first endorsed by Glen Campbell and over the years have been used by the likes of Paul Simon, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Eddie Van Halen, Alex Lifeson, Neil Diamond, Kenny Rogers, Melissa Etheridge, Roger Waters and David Gilmour.
"Everyone was using them. They used to come pick them up at the factory,"
says Alison Swan, owner of The Canterbury String shop in Hot Springs, S.D., and a former employee at the plant.
"We were all hoping that Mick would come."
Ovation founder and late Helicopter aviation pioneer Charles Kaman and his team are noted for creating the first acoustic guitar model that could be plugged into an amp.
"They were the very first and, I still believe to this day, the best under saddle pickup, the best true acoustic electric guitar sound," Swan says.
Ovations will continue to be manufactured outside the U.S., Fender spokesman Jason Farrell said Wednesday.
"We are committed to providing the same high-quality musical instruments our artists, consumers and customers expect and demand, and will continue to support the brands that are currently being produced in New Hartford," said Fender senior vice president Richard McDonald in a statement.
